Starting our journey at Nyamyumba Hot Springs was like stepping into a natural oasis,” one tourist recalled. The warmth of the hot springs soothed sore muscles as they dipped into the thermal waters, setting a relaxed tone for their scenic journey ahead. Surrounded by lush greenery, many felt the hot springs were the perfect beginning, creating a unique connection to nature before setting off on Lake Kivu.
Once aboard, tourists were met with spectacular lake and mountain views. As the boat glided across the lake, guides shared stories of the local culture, history, and nearby landmarks. “It was so calming to just sit back, listen to the guide, and watch the mountains roll by,” another guest described. From one side of the boat, passengers caught glimpses of local fishermen in wooden canoes, adding to the authentic Rwandan experience.
The tour’s stops offered even more variety. At one point, travelers had the chance to experience traditional Rwandan life through community-based activities along the shore. Guests were thrilled to learn about coffee farming firsthand, participating in a guided coffee tour that showed the entire process from crop to cup. “Tasting fresh Rwandan coffee on the farm was a highlight,” said a visitor, noting that the local brewers shared insights into the art and culture of coffee production.
Another group chose to visit Napoleon Island, where the journey took an adventurous turn. “I’d never seen so many fruit bats roosting in one place,” one visitor said, referencing the island’s lively colony of fruit bats that fill the trees. Velvet monkeys made appearances along the island paths, creating memorable moments for wildlife enthusiasts. Hiking to the summit of Napoleon Island rewarded guests with sweeping lake views, perfect for capturing the beauty of Lake Kivu from above.
